Planting the seed for young people to connect with nature and create a sustainable future.

RYSS was proud to present an amazing gardening program that reconnected young people with nature and the environment. Young people learnt about native plants, bush regeneration, gardening, health and wellbeing. The program focussed on bringing youth together fortnightly to participate in a range of horticultural activities, with the outcome being an edible garden for all to enjoy.

The program outcomes included:

• Increased gardening skills and gaining knowledge about native plants

• Enjoying the health benefits of home grown produce

• Building self-esteem and resilience in vulnerable youth

• Created opportunities for young people to connect with nature

• Increased youth ownership of public places

• Educated young people about healthy lifestyle choices

• Promoted sustainability through garden practises.

The program was led by Brenden Moore, a First Nations Community Greening Officer from the Botanic Gardens & Centennial Parklands. Brendan has qualifications in Horticulture, Aboriginal Studies as well as Community and Social Development.
